The Queen Annes have been around for a long time. James Gascoigne and
Kip Phillips have been friends since they grew up together in Bellevue.
Dissatisfied with punk rock, Kip and James decided to form The Queen
Annes . They shared a rehearsal space with punk band the Fartz which
was as unpleasant as one might imagine. The original line-up performed
to a packed house of enthusiastic kids at a local community college
student union, thus beginning a long reign of good luck with all-ages
concert settings. At a Rolling Stones concert at The Kingdome in 1980,
Kip informed O' Connell, who had auditioned for the group, that the job
as lead vocalist was his. Playing in bars was not as much fun for the
band.
Tom Dyer, the president of Green Monkey records, became interested
in the group and started to record them in 1983. From the earliest of
these sessions comes the single "I Thought Of You"/"This Is That." which
was recorded at Triangle Studios under the watchful eye of engineer
Peter Barnes. They also released one other track on vinyl on Green
Money's "Monkey Business" compilation in 1985.
As things would happen with bands, after many years they decided to go
their separate ways. But in 1994, Tardon Feathered and his buddy Scott
came up to Seattle from San Francisco to record the basic tracks for
what would become "The Mire" album in John's barn.
Vocals were recorded in a studio Tom had built over the winter. The rest
of the record's tracks were recorded in other random places. In '96, The Queen Annes
played a smattering of live shows to enthusiastic audiences. Erik 4-A,
who had been working with Thomas' other band Sick & Wrong, became
interested in The Queen Annes and started to record the band at Vagrant
Records Studio. The band also recorded two early Bee Gees songs as a
guinea pig for a new tape machine Erik 4-A needed to try out and he
fell in love with the band's no nonsense studio work ethic. The Queen
Annes also recorded the Beach Boys song "This Whole World". These songs
became the foundation for their latest recording effort called, "Revenge!",
soon to be released on Vagrant Records.
In 1997, The Queen Annes have reformed their own independent label, Q.
and A. Records, and have released and re-mixed "The Mire" on CD in
conjunction with Vagrant Records.
